Get to know Tyler Brown

Introducing Edulastic Innovator Spotlight member Tyler Brown! Tyler Brown is a 6th Grade ELA Teacher from Philadelphia, NY. He discovered Edulastic on Twitter and hasn’t stopped using it since. We enjoyed getting to know Tyler and hope you do too!

What inspired you to work in education?

I have always had a desire to learn new things, and I really wanted to share that desire with other people. What better way to do that, than to become a teacher! I was lucky enough to have fantastic teachers during my educational journey that further solidified my love for learning, and sharing that with others.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Learning is a journey, not a destination. It’s not about getting there “on time,” but more about how we get there. Learn from mistakes, challenge yourself, and don’t let the “status quo” be okay!

How did you learn about Edulastic?

I was trying to find a cleaner, easier to use program to assess my students. I also wanted something that was more robust. I found Edulastic through my online Twitter PLC. There were many teachers talking about how great it was. I decided to give the free version a try. I piloted with a group of students, and their feedback led me to really delving into the ins and outs of Edulastic! Since then I’ve given some minor trainings to other teachers in my building!

What do you love about Edulastic?

What I love most about Edulastic is the absolute ease of use. From developing an assessment, to then pushing it out to students, the process is seamless. The students really enjoy the ease of use, and getting feedback quickly instead of having to wait. The drive I see students have from seeing their scores and wanting to improve is just awesome.

What tips do you have for teachers who are new to Edulastic?

Explore all the features! You may see a question type that you don’t think would fit with your subject area, but there are so many ways to make it work for you! The adaptability of the program is unreal.

Share an #EduVictory from the past year. In other words, do you have a particular success story that has happened in your classroom or at your school?

The biggest #EduVictory this year has been being able to see the excitement of my students when they master something. They finish their “assessment” and the look of pure joy from being successful is amazing.

My “nerd/geek” items! I’ve got Funko Pops from Harry Potter (we read a few of the books for class!). I’ve also got other geeky things such as legos, video game lore books, Star Wars memorabilia…but hey the kids love it!
