Introducing Edulastic Innovator Spotlight member Carlos Fuentes! Carlos is a Math Teacher who has worked as an educator for 17 years. Based in Houston, TX, Carlos began using Edulastic last year. Carlos loves giving using Edulastic’s data to offer feedback to his students, and hopes to continue to offer personalized lessons to his students. We loved getting to know Carlos, and hope you will too!

What do you love about teaching?

The opportunity to: make a lasting an impression and to create new and exciting moments for learning.

Why did you become a teacher?

I call it the DIG: to make a Difference, to Inspire, and to Grow.

How did you discover Edulastic?

I bumped into Edulastic while looking for safe exam browser options and that would have tagging features for my repository of questions. I am fairly new to it, but I am growing exponentially to like it.

The the safe exam browser option works wonders and that the quality of questions in the database of a high level. The customization features for creating questions also has been great, as well as the support from Edulastic’s tech team.

How do you use Edulastic?

Formative for the most part now. Students enjoy Edulastic because of the feedback they get and the stats of how long they take for each question. They like the scratchpad too and having access to the Desmos graphing calculator. The safe exam browser is not something they are too thrilled about, but they understand why it’s important.

What are your teaching goals this school year?

To embed more flipped classroom opportunities that use more of Edulastic’s database as a way to monitor progress and adjust as necessary. I also need to get quick feedback, the so called snapshot moments to share with my students and their parents/guardians as we move towards summative assessments.

What are some tips for teachers who are new to Edulastic?

To keep creating questions, adding to your own database and tagging as much as you can so you can keep refining them as you get feedback from students on them. Edulastic gives you a lot of room to be creative and this is something I really enjoy about it.

What are some tips for teachers who are new to Edulastic?

My biggest tip would be to tell someone new to Edulastic to not be afraid to ask for help. Edulastic is an amazing tool and customizable to teachers needs.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in everybody’s ability to grow in their learning and to achieve the goals they set for themselves. Mistakes are integral of this process, and my underlying idea is to always reflect on them, as a matter of habit, and take this learning to their next learning experience, earning net gains along the process.
