We are proud to introduce our 32nd Sunday Spotlight, featuring Kayla Fillpot who is a 7th and 8th grade math teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Kayla’s favorite time of the year is Spring, she uses Edulastic to give pre-tests and guide her teaching, and in her free time she enjoys running, playing sports, and spending time with her daughter. Get to know Kayla Fillpot
What do you love about working in education? What motivates you?
Teaching is a profession that allows you to watch students grow educationally. I love watching the lightbulb click. When I have worked with a student on a topic they are struggling with, it is so encouraging to watch them understand it.
Why did you become a teacher?
I became a teacher because I enjoy pushing students to achieve their goals. Making math fun and engaging has become a passion of mine.
What is your “Edulastic story”?
I began using Edulastics as a way to allow students to use the computer and tools for questioning. From there, it became a testing platform where I can see what other teachers across the country are teaching.
Describe your favorite Edulastic “aha” moment.
Looking over the data after my first test was my “aha” moment. Edulastics breaks down so many details and shows so much data that reflecting on teaching is easy.
What are your teaching/learning goals this year?
My teaching goal is to find ways to get each student interested in math. That looks different for every student. My goal professionally is to add more diversity to my content.

Tips for new Edulastic users:
One challenge I faced was being able to pre-make tests in order to make sure I was teaching everything students need to know. Using the test is so helpful because you are able to see other’s level of teaching. As a teacher you are able to use that information to adjust your curriculum.

Favorite time of the school year and why:
I enjoy the spring. By this time in the year, you have built a strong relationship with the students and know them well. You are able to have fun in class and relate math to personal things the students enjoy.
Kindest compliment you have received from a student or teacher?
I made math enjoyable.
Funniest student moment?
I spilled a cup of water in another teacher’s classroom while he was out. The students distracted him while I cleaned up because he hates messes.
Greatest accomplishment in the classroom this past year:
On average from the fall to the winter district my students grew 1.6 years.
How do you like to spend your free time?
Running, playing sports, and spending time with my daughter.
