Dive into fun, interactive questions with Edulastic’s Highlight question items! These technology-enhanced items (TEIs) are immersive and engaging—making them both a student and teacher favorite. 

Edulastic includes four types of Highlight TEIs: Drawing Response, Shading, Hotspot, and Sentence Response. Drawing Response allows students to craft free-form drawn responses to a question. Drawing Response

What it is: Drawing Response questions require students to use drawing tools to craft their answer. You may insert a photo for students to draw on as part of their answer, or leave an empty space for a free-form response. Students have several tools to choose from: pencil, lines, circles, and more. 

How to use it: Drawing Response questions are ideal for any subject or grade. They are interactive and very fun! For example, science teachers—test your students’ knowledge of anatomy by asking students to circle various body parts. Social Studies teachers—utilize this question type to practice labeling maps! For anyone, start your class with a fun warm-up where students draw something exciting they did over the weekend. 

Shading

What it is: Edulastic’s Shading TEI asks students to interact with visual representations of mathematical fractions in the form of segmented rectangles. You choose the number of rows and columns, which determines how many rectangles appear for students. These questions are easy to set up and very simple for students to answer. 

How to use it: Students can develop an understanding of fractions with this interactive, visual question type. This is especially useful for lower-level math students. 

Hotspot

What it is: The Hotspot question type allows you to upload an image and outline target regions (hotspots) within the image. You also supply a written prompt for directions. Then, students select the indicated hotspots as their answer(s).

How to use it: Hotspot questions are the perfect TEI for element identification in an image. For younger learners, this is a great way to have students identify various objects in a photo, like a sun, tree, or animal. For a Social Studies assessment, you may highlight various states on a map of the United States and ask students to identify certain locations.

Sentence Response

What it is: Sentence Response items allow students to interact with a short passage or phrase in the question. When creating the item, you will write out a complete sentence or phrase with directions written above. Then, students can submit a response by selecting various words within the question based on your directions.

How to use it: Sentence Response is commonly used in ELA assessments, where you can test your students’ knowledge of parts of speech, grammar, punctuation, and more. For example, evaluate your students’ knowledge of capitalization by requiring them to select words that should be capitalized within a sentence.
