What is MAP?
The Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) is a state assessment that is administered to Missouri students towards the end of the school year. MAP is used to indicate the level of a student’s academic achievement. Using MAP, key education stakeholders are
often able to assess the overall quality of education across the state. All students from 3rd grade to 8th grade in both Missouri public and charter schools sit for this assessment. Grade 3-8 sit for Mathematics and ELA (English Language
Assessment) while grade 5 to 8 sit for Science tests.
Background of Missouri’s MAP Test
The MAP test Missouri administers was first introduced in 1993 with the Outstanding School Act. The act introduced a requirement for students in Missouri to sit for an annual statewide assessment in order to measure academic standards. Since then, the
MAP test has undergone various transitions and changes to adapt to the ever changing academic requirements
Initially MAP testing began as a grade span test covering Mathematics, Science and Communication Arts. In the 2008-2009 school year, EOC (End-of-Course) assessments were administered. Subjected tested include Algebra I, English II, Biology, Government,
American History and Geometry. From 2010-2015, EOCs transitioned into digital online testing that can be administered online.
MAP Testing Window, Duration and Format of Questions
MAP test practice on Edulastic helps students become familiar with how MAP assessments are administered, their format, duration, technology use, as well as the best practices leading up to the test. The annual testing window generally runs from the beginning
of April to the end of May. Each subject tested in MAP has a varied time duration.
Typically, the exams consist of 3 sessions except for grade 8 ELA which has 4 sessions, grade 5 science and grade 8 science with 2 sessions each. In most cases, exam durations range from 75 minutes to 295 minutes with each section assigned a specified
number of minutes with breaks in between. For instance grade 3 ELA lasts between 85-195 minutes while the grade 3 math assessment is 75-140 minutes. The time taken for a test depends on the subject and grade level.
Missouri Assessment Program assessment questions are administered in diverse formats. The main types of MAP test questions include the following:
- Selected Response or multiple choice questions where a student selects an answer based on the options provided.
- Technology Enhanced questions which rely on technology to present questions and how students respond to them. Question formats here include drag and drop, drop down menu, table fill in and hot text among others.
- Constructed Response or Short Text items that expect students to provide an appropriate answer to the question provided.
- Performance Tasks/Events where students tackle challenging questions by applying their reasoning skills using real-world scenarios.

Skills Students Need to Take MAP Test
MAP test practice on Edulastic is the best way to prepare students as it increases their level of confidence and exposes them to a real-exam scenario environment. Edulastic has been at the forefront of providing various practice session for all grade
levels to help students adequately prepare for their exams.
Given the level of technology used in these examinations, Edulastic offers online MAP test practice sessions that help students to internalize key technology skills required. Such skills include keyboarding where students practice using the keyboard and
familiarize themselves with various keyboard functions such as delete, scrolling bars, and shift functions.
Practice sessions also help students learn how to answer various questions using technical skills such as drag and drop, filling of tables, select and deselect as well as using online calculators effectively. When students do practice tests, they learn
how to use computers and tech gadgets for an extended period of time to successfully complete their tests. Edulastic is focused on helping students practice for MAP testing in a unique yet convenient way that ensures students are well
prepared in all aspects of the exam.
Instructional Topics or Areas to Cover During the Year
Missouri covers diverse subject areas and it’s essential for teachers to know which subject areas need to be covered during the year to help students adequately prepare for the MAP test. There are so many topics that need to be covered and some of them
include English I and II, Algebra I and II, Government, American History,Geometry, and others.
