Use ILEARN Practice Tests to Prep Your Students

With the proper preparation, ILEARN tests offer your students an opportunity to show off everything they’ve learned. Test-taking butterflies are quickly shooed away with practice in the virtual test-taking environment and classwork that covers the content that ILEARN tests assess. Take test prep a step further with ILEARN practice tests, and your students will be well on their way to a successful testing session.
Here’s what you need to know about ILEARN, ILEARN practice tests, and virtual test prep.

What is ILEARN?

ILEARN, the Indiana Learning Evaluation Assessment Readiness Network, is the annual summative assessment for Indiana students. It tests Indiana Academic Standards across the core subjects of English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies and is delivered primarily online. ILEARN tests per grade are as follows:
  • English language arts (grades 3–8)
  • Mathematics (grades 3–8)
  • Science (grades 4 and 6)
  • Social studies (grade 5)
ILEARN also offers end-of-course tests in biology and U.S. government for high school students to be taken upon completion of the associated course, regardless of grade level. The biology test is required, while the U.S. government test is optional. The biology tests aren’t designed to calculate the overall course grades; the U.S. government test is intended to serve as a final course exam, but schools can decide individually whether or not to include test scores in final grades.
ILEARN tests are not timed, and no retests are available. The computer-based tests include adaptive segments, which adjust question difficulty based on a student’s previous answers to provide a better idea of a student’s level of standards attainment.
ILEARN’s online testing system offers students tools and accommodations to support their testing experience, including spell check, dictionary, and thesaurus access when responding to a writing task, Desmos calculator for the grade 6–8 mathematics tests, and built-in glossaries available in English, Arabic, Burmese, Mandarin, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
For students with significant cognitive abilities who can’t access ILEARN tests, Indiana schools administer I AM (Indiana’s Alternate Measure). This test is stage-adaptive, so a student’s performance on part one of the test determines which of the three tiers they will be given for part two. I AM assesses students on Indiana’s Content Connectors, which are aligned with the Indiana Academic Standards.
English language learners take the annual WIDA English Language Proficiency Assessments, and third graders are assessed on their reading skills with IREAD-3, the Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination. (IREAD-3 offers a summer retest.)
This spring’s high school graduating class will be the last required to pass graduation qualifying examinations in order to graduate, while the class of 2023 will be the first to take the SAT as their grade 11 assessment for mathematics and English language arts, happening this spring.

How to Use ILEARN Practice Tests to Prep Your Students

Virtual tests like ILEARN use digital technology to involve more than just basic multiple-choice questions. On test day, your students will face technology-enhanced questions and need to know how to navigate from one question to another while also interacting with the questions to provide their answers adequately.
The good news: Indiana releases ILEARN test questions each year, so your students can practice in a virtual environment with the same questions they’ll face on the real exams.
Along with building confidence in their ability to drag-and-drop, fill in the blank, or create a graph in the virtual environment, your students will gain familiarity with their digital devices. Have them practice on the same device they’ll use on test day so that this familiarity will translate to their ILEARN testing experience.
