Get to know Emily Young

What do you love about working in education? What motivates you? 

I love being able to have a job where I can make a difference everyday.

Why did you become a teacher? 

My Mom says from the time I was old enough to talk, that I would line up my stuffed animals and “teach” them. One of the first items I asked for was a chalkboard for my pretend classroom. I have always had an internal calling to teach. As I grew older, I’m sure my drive to teach only became stronger. In high school I tutored elementary students and couldn’t wait to get my own classroom!

What has your path as a teacher been like? 

This is my 16th year of teaching. I taught first grade for 13, third grade Language Arts for 2, and this is my second year teaching 6th grade Social Studies. I think with moving up to 6th grade I have found my niche’ I love how I can make History come alive for my students. I love dressing up and engaging my students so they not only learn about the items I’m teaching from my curriculum, but they get to experience it.

Describe your favorite Edulastic “aha” moment.

I heard about Edulastic from colleagues at a Depth of Knowledge training. At the time, I was teaching 3rd Grade Language Arts. In Ohio, we have a Third Grade Guarantee for our students. This law requires 3rd graders to pass our State ELA test at a proficient level or above in order to move onto fourth grade. Our first attempt at this test my students were allowed to use paper/pencil, however the second attempt was online. I experimented with Edulastic generating questions and learning how to create assessments and fell in LOVE! From that point on, when I have access to class sets of technology, I have used Edulastic for my assessments. I love the immediate feedback for my students, the connection to my state’s standards, and of course the data tracking.

I try to make it hands-on and make them experience it when I can so it makes an impact.”

What are your teaching/learning goals this year?

I would love to have more student-led learning occurring in my classroom.

Tips for new Edulastic users:

Don’t make one assessment and give up! It might take your students a few times of using Edulastic to get the hang of it, especially if you are working with younger students.
