Here’s what you need to know about Ohio State Tests and how you can prepare your students with practice OST tests in Edulastic.

Ohio State Tests: What You Should Know

Designed to measure student mastery of Ohio’s Learning Standards, Ohio State Tests are annual achievement tests for grades 3 and up. The exams provide insight into how individuals — and particular schools or districts — excel or struggle in specific subject areas.
Ohio State Tests cover the following subjects:
  • English language arts (grades 3–8)
  • Mathematics (grades 3–8)
  • Science (grades 5 and 8)
High school students take end-of-course exams for the following subjects:
  • English language arts II
  • Algebra I
  • Geometry (or integrated mathematics I and II)
  • Biology
  • American history
  • American government
Ohio State Tests are primarily administered online, with opportunities for paper test exceptions for schools that lack the technology infrastructure or students who require paper tests due to IEP or 504 plan accommodations or religious beliefs. Ohio also offers the Alternate Assessment for Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities (AASCD) for students whose disabilities prevent them from accessing the standard tests meaningfully.
Each Ohio State Test is administered in two parts, and each part ranges in time limit from 75 to 105 minutes.
Spring Ohio State Test results will be available to districts in the Centralized Reporting System in June.

How to Prepare Your Students for Ohio State Tests with Practice OST Tests

Here are three key ways to help prepare students for the Ohio State Tests:
  1. Give Practice with the Online Testing Environment: Integrate online tools, keyboarding, and online testing tools throughout the school year.
  2. Check Content Mastery: Work with students to ensure they understand the themes, topics, and learning standards needed to do well on the test.
  3. OST Practice Tests: Assign practice tests, so students understand what to expect. This also helps you, as the instructor, identify how to best guide students.
1) Give Practice with the Online Testing Environment:
As virtual exams, Ohio State Tests require students to be familiar with digital testing technology. They know how to answer technologically-enhanced questions and navigate from one question to the next. Practice OST tests enable students to develop this familiarity — while also gaining a sense of the content the Ohio State Tests will cover.
For an extra benefit: Administer practice OST tests on the same devices students will use on test day. That way, when test time comes, they’ll know the ins and outs of their device and the virtual testing environment.
Practice OST tests mimic the real exam, with technology-enhanced questions that require students to do things like:
  • Drag and drop
  • Fill in tables
  • Select and de-select
  • Use dropdown menus
  • Plot points on a graph
  • And more!
Short answer and essay questions mean that students need proficient keyboarding skills. These skills take time to learn and hone, so ensure your students have ample practice in the virtual testing environment.
In addition to practicing in the testing environment, giving students assessments that match the OST Tests will help you as the teacher see what students know and discover where they might need more instruction and understanding.
2) Check Content Mastery
Make sure students learn and master what they need to know for the state test! Give students quick checks and formative assessments throughout the year to see how well they’ve got the content and understand key concepts. The Ohio Department of Education provides additional details about what to expect on the test on the website. Released OST practice tests can give a realistic perspective on how students will do on the official exam.
3) OST Practice Tests
Practice builds stamina, comfort, and confidence for students. It helps them know what to expect when the official testing day comes around. Plus, it provides you, the instructor, with insight into where students are at, so the official test results aren’t a mystery. We’ve made practice tests access easy for you. Read on!
