What inspired you to work in education?

Working in education has been a lifelong dream. Over the years I considered other occupations but always went back to working with children. During my first year in college, I joined the choir and my choir director and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. James Mc Daniel were public school educators. The love and inspiration they showed and gave to me during my college years was truly confirmation of my career choice.

How did you learn about Edulastic? What is your Edulastic story?

In 2018, I had the opportunity as the Teacher Leader to attend Teacher Leader summit in New Orleans, Louisiana. During a presentation, a presenter mentioned Edulastic and features which peaked my curiosity. When I left the session, I “stalked” the program, liked what I saw and begin to implement it for the following school year.

What do you love about Edulastic? How do you use it in your classroom?

I love pretty much all aspects of the program, especially the word “Free”! But aside from being a free assessment tool, I love the real time feature and the data a teacher can receive during the assessment and after the assessment! This data really allows a teacher to truly provide data driven instruction. This year, I have used Edulastic in a variety of ways such as mini assessments, LEAP Prep assignments, center assignments, and Problem of the Day.

Please sum up your teaching philosophy in a few sentences?

Teachers that embrace a data driven classroom possess the most powerful tool to engage, communicate, assess, and inform students of growth during the educational journey. This tool allows teachers to work off students strengths to properly address weakness to close achievement gaps.

What tips do you have for teachers who are new to Edulastic?

I encourage teachers to use this program with an open mind. I think often when teachers hear assessment tools, they only use it for assessment. I would also recommend for teachers to implement this program to help them help their students. Using the real time while students are working on an assignment, allows the teacher to help struggling students as well as look at questions that might be misleading according to how it is being asked on the assessment. Teachers should use the question bank! It has rigorous and well formatted questions to use for your students.
