What is GMAS?
GMAS is an acronym for Georgia Milestone Assessment System. This is a statewide comprehensive test administered in the state of Georgia from Grade 3 through high school. GMAS as it is popularly called measures how well students have internalized skills and knowledge as per the state-adopted curriculum standards.
GMAS tests cover the core subject areas of English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Social Studies and Science. Grade 3-8 students sit for end-of-grade English Language Arts and Mathematics Assessments, while Grade 5 and Grade 8 students are also tested in social studies and science. Additionally, high school students also sit for 10 end-of-course GMAS tests in the following subject areas; English Language Arts, Mathematics, Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology, Science, Social Studies, Physical Science, Economics/Business and United States History.
GMAS assessments began in the year 2014-15. Before GMAS test came into existence, students in elementary and middle school sat for Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCTs) in five key subjects of Math, English Language Arts, Reading, Science and Social Studies. Students in Grade 3, 5 and 8 also sat for a separate writing assessment.

Georgia Milestones have been instrumental in offering quality assessment to students at various stages of learning. The core aim of GMAS tests is to provide teachers and parents with key information about students’ achievement as well as their preparedness for the next level of learning. Background and Schedule of GMAS Tests
Just like most state tests, GMAS tests are typically administered in the Spring. During this period, various assessments are carried out for students at different grade levels. Within the state designated assessment period, every school district picks a local testing window based on their local school calendar.
The exam structure for GMAS tests is divided into sessions. For instance, GMAS English Language Arts has 3 sessions while GMAS Math test consists of 2 sessions. For ELA assessment, Session 1 is administered on the single day while Session 2 and 3 can either be done on a single day or spread over 2 days.
GMAS Testing Time Periods
The exam time periods for assessments vary depending on the subject being tested. GMAS English Language Assessment (ELA) Session 1 lasts 90 minutes while both Session 2 and 3 take 75 minutes each. Both GMAS Math sessions (1 and 2) take 85 minutes.
GMAS Types of Questions
GMAS assessments consist of four main types of questions which are:
- Selected Response or Multiple Choice questions
- Extended Constructed Response items
- TE or Multi Select or Two Part Questions
- Constructed Response items
